Filippo Rizzo comincia giovanissimo a suonare la batteria da autodidatta, ed esordisce alla giovane età di 11 anni alla batteria, dimostrando un talento e una attenzione straordinario verso la musica, all’età di otto anni comincia a studiare chitarra da autodidatta e qualche anno dopo assieme ad altri ragazzi forma la prima band, suonando covers di Otis Redding, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, ecc.. La passione per la musica lo aveva portato sin da quel tempo a vivere l’esperienza dei pop-festivals che si erano tenuti a Palermo per tre anni di fila. Quindi l’impatto con Duke Ellington ed altri grandi del jazz, tutto il contesto musicale attraverso proposte di artisti di stili e culture diverse, con i Colosseum, storica rock-jazz band, o i Black Sabbath (hard rock band), aveva avuto un impatto positivamente notevole sulla crescita artistica, e la capacità di esprimersi in seguito nei diversi stili musicali come session player.
Una delle tante piccole formazioni che lo vede già leader a sedici anni, lo porta a far parte come supporter di una più famosa e già affermata pop-rock band di quel tempo che dopo aver estromesso il loro bassista lo invita a prenderne il posto vacante. Da questo momento in poi si delinea la capacità e la crescita come musicista e il cambiamento dalla chitarra al basso elettrico dal quale non si staccherà più. La conoscenza dei gruppi come i Cream con Jack Bruce, grande bassista virtuoso di quel tempo, dei Blood Sweet and Tears, i primi Chicago e dei grandi del jazz da Frank Sinatra a Louis Armstrong e il suo approcio passionale verso il basso elettrico presto lo vede muoversi con disinvoltura sullo strumento. Nello stesso periodo comincia gli studi classici al conservatorio di musica Bellini di Palermo nella classe di contrabbasso e prende il diploma di solfeggio. Al quinto anno interrompe gli studi, deluso da un ideale che non si rivela tale nell’ambito dell’accademia classica. L’attenzione dal punto di vista strumentale è rivolta a bassisti e contrabassisti che seguirà sin dall’inizio del suo percorso di crescita, nomi come James Jamerson, Larry Graham, Paul McCartney per le sue bass lines funzionali, C. Mingus, Ray Brown, Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke, sono fra quelli che assieme a molti altri hanno avuto grande influenza. Scopre il bassista per eccellenza Jaco Pastorius e ne comincia la trascrizione dei suoi riffs e soli, analizzando il genio di questo virtuoso, e affina il suo mood con gusto, ma si stacca da quella sonorità e comincia anche un percorso di ricerca del proprio suono, grande ma definito.
Comincia a girare per tutta Italia e l’Europa nei vari teatri, e music hall. Incide con una delle prime band, il primo single per una etichetta discografica in grande attività negli anni settanta, che diventerà un hit venduto in tutta Italia e anche in alcuni paesi europei.
Da qui anche altre collaborazioni come free lance con artisti famosi di pop.
Quindi essendo spiccata anche la dote di session-man, Filippo Rizzo all’età di 21 anni decide di lasciare la band e intraprende un percorso di studio e di ricerca che lo porta nel 1982 ad affrontare la prima vera prova da strumentista e decide di andare a New York per qualche tempo. Comincia cosi a suonare le vere prime session con diversi musicisti. Rick Laird, grande bassista e didatta al tempo in una band storica con John Mc Laughlininsegnava a New York, e quindi è stata la meta successiva per un banco di prova che lo porterà a comprendere meglio il linguaggio musicale della cosiddetta musica colta come il jazz e le sue contaminazioni che già dal 1969 potevano far etichettare come fusion un album di John Mc Laughlin, e Bill Cobham proprio con il bassista sopra citato. Quindi nel suo soggiorno a New York spazia fra i concerti del Blue Note e il Village Vanguarde alle arene, dove per la prima volta vedrà suonare i Police di Sting con una sezione inedita di fiati ripercorrendo il loro repertorio in chiave rock e non solo rock. Ritornato in Italia, molto presto si trasferisce a Milano per l’attività di turnista che comunque lo porta a collaborare anche con musicisti di estrazione jazzistica. Viene anche reclutato in formazioni come le big band che lo portano ad esperienze musicali di grande crescita.Comincia il suo viaggio nella composizione e l’arrangiamento, e lo vede impegnato anche con un’altra valida sperimentazione per un periodo di quattro anni con Cinzia Spata, cantante di jazz , e musicisti come il pianista di grande talento ed oggi fra i migliori del panorama internazionale, Salvatore Bonafede . Le collaborazioni sono state molteplici e con grandi musicisti di estrazione diversache e hanno dato input nuovi alla maturità professionale di F. Rizzo come bassista e musicista. Jamerson, Nel periodo in cui vive a Londra per diverse collaborazioni, F. Rizzo è tutore al Musician Institute , grande scuola di musica che ospita allievi da tutte le parti del mondo ed è li che come tutore ospita tra i tanti musicisti che venivano chiamati per gli stages, il batterista Bernard Purdue ( J. Brown, Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan ed altri) nella sua classe per un workshop da realizzare insieme. Oltre queste ed altre grandi eperienze di lavoro l’altra attenzione da parte di F. Rizzo è verso le collaborazioni con le big bands e le orchestre di musica contemporanea, le quali riuscivano a dargli una visione più completa e più complessa nel modo di gestire la ritmica sia come motore propulsivo ma anche come mediatore nella complessità delle armonie e degli arrangiamenti che un vasto organico di solito sviluppa.
Apertura a 360 gradi verso la musica e a tutti i suoi linguaggi, non ultimo il mondo della musica afro e latina per i quali F. Rizzo ha avuto sempre grande interesse per la varietà dei ritmi. Nel contempo incide con Lee Lindsey una cantante Canadese trapiantata a Londra un C.D. assieme al top dei musicisti come Jack Guy produttore dell’album e degli ultimi album dei Litfiba al tempo di P. Pelù, Alan Darby (P. Mc Cartney, Clapton), Mike Lindup dei Level 42 e tanti altri. Numerose le collaborazioni con jazzisti di grande fama come David Murray, Tommy Flanaghan, Gaslin, Intra, Cerri e molti altri.
F. Rizzo come produttore ed arrangiatore, questa è un’altra tappa importante che tutt’oggi gli consente di sperimentare oltre che a realizzare nel proprio home recording studio alcune produzioni di materiale proprio.

Played with Los Locos, a latin-pop band, very famous in Italy.
2003 Joined with a D.J. (Junior La Menza), a house-pop production for recording labels . Remixed many songs.
2002 Played with Sarah Jane Morris and Nick the Nightfly at Politeama Garibaldi Theatre in Palermo with Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana and others jazz-men as Emilio Soana (trumpet), Stefano Danna ( tenor sax), Francesco Buzzurro (guitar), conducted by Gabriele Comeglio. Recorded a C.D. during the same concert titled “ The music I love “ .
2001 Played with Tim Hagans, a famous American trumpet
player (who records for Blue Note) and his band, in a festival named “Miles Gloriosus” dedicated obviously to Miles Davis. Joined a Dub-jungle band named “Ain’t nothing…but jazz”, with Orazio Maugeri, performing in live acts.
2000 Recorded in London for the English EMI records label with a pop band.
Played in London with Madeleine, a folk/pop singer- songwriter who recorded for Muse record.
1999 Produced, arranged and played a Pop work in Italy for an independent label, as a compilation where artists and bands played came from all over the world. Recorded in London as session player a pop-rock CD with Lee Lindsey, produced by Jack Guy for an English label (Tall Poppy Records) released at the end of December 1999. In the same work played musicians as Alan Darby (Paul Mc Cartney), Michael Lindup (Level 42) and many more. Played in Berlin, produced and arranged a Pop CD.

1995 Played a modern music repertoire (from classical to pop),composed by Michael Torke and directed and played on the piano by himself,and generally supervised by David Miller, who had recorded the same repertoire with the London Sinfonietta. In the same year, played with excellent bluesmen such as Bo Champ from St. Louis and Leslie Coleman Hawkins from San Francisco. (USA).
1994 Performed with Franco Cerri, a very famous Italian guitar jazz-man in a tour promoted by Josè Rallo, singer and manager of the important Donnafugata wines.
1992 Played with an orchestra conducted by Giorgio Gaslini, a highly prestigious musician. We performed music composed by the best Italian classical music authors. G. Sollima, Tutino, and many more.
1991 The Orchestra Jazz Siciliana (OJS) organizes a tour of Italy with some of the following : Vesta Williams, Marlene Shaw, Deniece Williams, Cheryl Barnes, Linda Stokes. (all Motown singers)
1990 Played with a 60-element orchestra during the World Cup period at a soul music festival (Motown) with some of the above-mentioned artists.
1989 Invited to play with Tommy Flannagan, world-wide known pianist (John Coltrane). Was asked to play with the OJS Big Band to perform a first national of Duke Ellington’s Suite in HRH Queen Elisabeth II’s honour, conducted by Bob Wilber. On the same year I was invited on a European tour with the Big Band performing music by Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, a great bass player. They invited me to perform music specially composed for the electric bass.

1986 worked with one of the major American tenor-sax players, Lew Tabackin, as well as playing with several fusion, pop music, Latin, Brazilian, Jamaican artists and groups.
1985 took part as a bass player in several major bands, among others: Reinhardt Jazz Orchestra the Brass Group Big Band, today simply known as OJS,. and for the Massimo Opera House in Palermo. The OJS has, over the years been conducted by Mel Lewis, Gil Evans, Archie Sheep and many others.
1984 Joined and collaborated with a jazz singer very talented in the project called Cinzia Spata Unit, the band performed in the most famous jazz stages and festivals, playing in the same band with others italian famous sessionists ; Christian Meyer, Andrea Braido, Paolo Mappa, etc.
Another very jazzy/fusion band where performed since the beginning was “Triangle music”, jazz covers and original arrangements and grooves in a mix of styles.
1983 In Milan:played with several jazz orchestras and pop music players.
1982 New York. Attended Rick Laird’s electric bass clinics (Mahavishnu Orchestra) and played with other famous bands in jam sessions.
Played as endorser for well known labels making instruments as Washburn, Paul Red Smith and others in Milan and Pesaro Expo for many years.
